The Alberta Opportunity Stream has two distinct eligibility paths — one for workers, one for PGWP holders — and requirements must be met at both application and assessment.
Everyone needs:
- A valid work permit in Alberta
- No maintained status or restoration status
- An eligible occupation in Alberta
- A full-time Alberta job offer in your current occupation
- Licensing or certification, if required
Eligible non-PGWP work permit types include LMIA-based work permits and several LMIA-exempt categories (trade agreements, intra-company transfers, IEC, Mobilité Francophone, religious workers, and vulnerable worker/family member open work permits).
Language requirement: CLB 5 for TEER 0–3, CLB 4 for TEER 4–5, and CLB 7 specifically for NOC 33102.
If you’re a worker (non-PGWP):
- At least high school equivalent education
- ECA usually required, unless you hold an eligible Canadian credential or Alberta trade certificate
- 12 months of Alberta work experience in the last 18 months, OR 24 months in Canada/abroad in the last 30 months
- Experience must be full-time (30+ hrs/week) in your current occupation
If you’re a PGWP holder:
- Must hold a PGWP after graduating from an Alberta publicly funded post-secondary institution
- Credential must be an eligible Alberta-approved credential
- Occupation must relate to your Alberta field of study
- If post-diploma/post-bacc studies started on or after April 1, 2019, your occupation must also relate to your prior post-secondary studies outside Canada
- 6 months full-time Alberta work experience in your current occupation within the last 18 months
Child care workers: You’ll need valid Alberta certification as a Level 2 or Level 3 Early Childhood Educator.
